Blizzards Aaron Keller, Overwatch 2’s assistant game director, and Michael Chu, lead writer have done a recent interview with the PlayStation Blog.
In the interview, they discuss things like how this will be a story-focused game with a new levelling system for your heroes. In addition to, Aaron Keller gave an example of a skills system, “Reinhardt’s Talent called ‘Epicenter’ where instead of a cone effect for his Earthshatter ability, it becomes an Earthshatter with a full 360-degree effect around him.”
Also, they are going to expand the Overwatch universe by continuing the story from the point of Winston calling in the heroes for help. When asked if they were going to fully shift to PVE, Aaron Keller said that they are not going to stop the competitive side of Overwatch, they want all 50 million players to enjoy whatever they want.
They added on by saying that Overwatch 2 will have the same completive play when it launches, but they can’t discuss what is new or changed just yet. Along with that, they said that Overwatch 2 gives them a better format for storytelling as well, having a beginning, middle and end, as well as being able to have 2x the map size of OW1.
Four-player co-op is also available for the story missions. Lastly, character cosmetics will be making a return to Overwatch 2.
