PS5 backwards compatibility confirmed by Ubisoft CEO
In the current generation, one of the few key features Xbox had over PlayStation was their backwards compatibility functions. This no longer appears to be the case as Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated that both consoles “will be running almost all the back catalogue of the previous consoles.” This is exciting news as PlayStation have been surprisingly behind the times in regards to backwards compatibility. There are so many well renowned critical gems from previous PlayStation consoles that have never been lucky enough to see a remaster or just a resurgence on the PlayStation store. It would be nice to finally give them the playtime they deserve.
What does “all the back catalogue” mean?
This could hopefully hint at more than one might expect. The natural assumption is that PS4 games will play on PS5 but all backlog could mean even further than PS4. Xbox themselves announced Xbox original, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games would play on the Xbox Series X so if PlayStation don’t follow suit, Microsoft could have a slight head-start heading into the next generation. We hope for both PlayStation and us, they do!
